Hazardous Weather: An In-depth Guide to Citizen Preparedness

Are You Ready? An In-depth Guide to Citizen Preparedness was written by FEMA and designed to better prepare citizens for dangerous weather such as tornadoes and other major events. One of the two documents being provided below is specific to tornadoes and was pulled directly from the larger FEMA document Are You Ready? An In-depth Guide to Citizen Preparedness, which has also been provided below. When faced with the threat of dangerous weather, always listen and watch for information related to Collin County and the Town of Fairview. Also, always be prepared to take shelter immediately. Where you take shelter will depend upon your location at that time. The documents below will give you specific recommendations for specific locations.

ATTENTION ALL RESIDENTS

It has come to our attention that many of you have been receiving phone calls from a number posing to be from the Fairview Police Department. If you get a phone call from the Fairview Police Department and they state that you have outstanding warrants and you need to pay, please hang up and block that number. They are calling from an unknown number but will then hang up and call back spoofing the Police Department's number making it look like it is our actual number but isn’t. The Fairview Police Department’s number is (972) 886-4211. Any other phone numbers should be disregarded and reported to scamalerts@fairviewtexas.org

Scam Alert

Atmos Energy recently became aware of an ongoing “Search Engine Phishing” operation, where cybercriminals use search engine optimization (SEO) techniques to place a fake website into a browser’s top search results.

Any user who clicks on one of these “spoofed” websites will be redirected to what looks like a legitimate Atmos Energy page, but that fake page will feature a fake customer service number and other false information. If a customer calls the fake customer service number, they may be asked to provide login credentials or other sensitive information that the scammers can leverage to compromise bank, credit card, or other accounts belonging to the same customer.

Telephone scams are also on the rise, including one where impostors call customers directly and offer a discount on their Atmos Energy bill if they pay immediately over the phone. As a reminder:

• Atmos Energy will never ask for payment using prepaid debit cards, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or unauthorized third-party payment or mobile application.

If you ever have concerns about the legitimacy of a call, simply hang up and call Atmos Energy customer service at 888.286.6700.

• Payment for an Atmos Energy bill should be made through the online Account Center or through other authorized payment methods.

• Atmos Energy will provide multiple notices and work to assist customers with payment plans and assistance options before any service interruptions take place.

• Unless there is an emergency, Atmos Energy employees will not call before 7 a.m. or after 6 p.m. Central time.

“The most effective way to combat this recent increase in scam attempts is through education, awareness and extreme caution anytime someone contacts you about a utility bill payment,” said Andrie Krahl, Atmos Energy manager of public affairs. “In addition to online and telephone scams, beware of impostors demanding payment at your door. Always ask for an employee’s identification badge which displays name, photograph, and Atmos Energy logo. Our employees will not collect payments in person. If you suspect an impostor, call our customer service number at 888.286.6700 to verify the employee's identity and contact local authorities.” Customers who suspect fraud or who feel threatened during contact with a scammer should contact local law enforcement authorities and Atmos Energy Customer Service at 888.286.6700, Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Central time.

TxDOT Road Construction on FM1378

Monthly Outdoor Siren Testing

The Fairview outdoor warning system consists of pole-mounted sirens that are used to alert people who are outside of a building of a pending severe event.

The storm warning siren system is designed to warn people outside, not inside, to seek shelter.

These systems are activated by the local public safety authorities based on specific criteria.

The Fairview system is activated by the Allen Public Safety (APS) dispatchers, as a courtesy to the Town of Fairview since 2009. The Fairview and Allen systems are provided by the same manufacturer, so it is very easy for APS to activate our system as they are activating theirs.

Our system can be used for a variety of warning purposes (ex: shelter in place for a hazardous material spill, assist in the search for a lost person, etc.) as it is essentially a very powerful public address system.

The Fairview system will be activated when:

  • Wind speeds are greater than 70 mph.
  • There is a threat of large damaging hail.
  • During severe thunderstorm warnings where local storm spotters have witnessed lowering/rotating clouds in the immediate area.
  • There is a tornado warning for the immediate area with or without local storm spotter visual confirmation of lowering/rotating clouds.
  • The Fairview Fire Rescue or Police Chief requests activation.
  • Monthly Siren Testing

Audible siren tests are performed at noon on the first Wednesday of each month. Tests will not be performed during severe weather events. If Fairview or Allen is experiencing severe weather on a regularly scheduled date for siren testing, please assume the siren is weather-related and seek shelter immediately.  Fairview Fire Rescue maintains the outdoor warning system located in Fairview.
